Acerca de 401 KINGS HWY

Built in 1871, the Italianate-style Thompson-Hocker House at 401 Kings Highway in Lewes reflects the Picturesque Movement in architecture, which looked to romantic eras of the past like the Renaissance for inspiration. This historic house features a low profile roof, deep bracketed eaves, pedimented windows, and classical columns. The three-part bay window on the east facade includes a unique entryway. The house still features its original wood floors, a wide "living" foyer, and a walnut grand staircase. Throughout the original house, spacious rooms boast wide moldings at the floor and crown moldings that enhance ceilings 11 feet high. The living room features an intricate plaster cornice and an elaborate plaster-and-wood medallion in the center of the ceiling. Similar medallions grace the high ceilings of the library and dining room, which are separated by original heavy folding wood-paneled doors. In 1902, Dr. Ulysses Washington Hocker and his wife, Adella, purchased this house. Dr. Hocker added an office on the southeast corner of the original house and his patients waited to see him on his home's wide wraparound porch. Dr. Hocker and his wife also installed oak parquet floors in some of their home's first floor rooms. Antique dealers Jane and Dick Gott fell in love with the Thompson-Hocker House in 1978 and made it home for nearly 40 years. The Gotts opened their antique shop in Dr. Hocker's office and added a kitchen in their home's enclosed back porch. They opened their one-of-a-kind Picturesque house during the Lewes Historical Society's annual Christmas tours, and their historically appropriate holiday decorations often won local awards. The Thompson-Hocker House in Lewes commands a spacious lot at the prominent corner of Kings Highway and Washington Street, just three blocks from downtown shopping and restaurants. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property within Lewes' Historic District, this home offers 3,300 square feet of living space full of 19th-century Picturesque architectural wonders. This historic gem awaits a new owner with the vision and passion to return it to is former grandeur.
