Described as “the best preserved 19th Century village in Middlesex County” when it was nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, Cranbury offers a blend of modern convenience and small-town sensibility. People have inhabited the Cranbury area since early colonial times, and even today the yesteryear, small-town charm remains a predominant feature of this borough of 3,900 people. Its tree-lined residential streets surround a well-preserved historic downtown area. But for those craving urban escape or working in the city, New York City is just 45 minutes north along the New Jersey Turnpike.

Local Attractions

History itself is one of the main attractions of Cranbury, and the Cranbury Historical and Preservation Society goes to great lengths to keep the town’s history alive, maintaining the Cranbury Museum and other historic buildings and sites around town, and sponsoring various tours for visitors. The downtown area offers quaint shopping and dining options, while those who love the outdoors will enjoy playing in the township’s 11 parks and open spaces, notably the scenic Brainerd Lake. A short drive, bus ride, or train ride can take you to numerous area shopping malls, or into the Big Apple itself.

Education and Schools

Cranbury’s education standards are well above the national average. The Cranbury School, the township’s only public school, enrolls just over 550 students in grades PK-8. Students in grades 9-12 attend nearby Princeton High School, which consistently ranks among the best in the entire country.
