Montgomery Township, Belle Mead, and Skillman
Don’t let the bucolic appearance of Montgomery Township lull you into thinking that nothing forward-thinking happens here! There is tremendous pride and action when it comes to saving open spaces and farmland (about one third of its 32 square miles is preserved), attaining landmark status for its many historic structures and places, and carefully planning the development of its community.
But there is also an effort underway to build on the area’s healthy corporate roster and transform this section of central Jersey into the Research Triangle or Silicon Valley of the northeast, courtesy of Einstein’s Alley. This bold initiative by Congressman Rush Holt seeks to capitalize on the area’s intellectual powerhouses, among them Princeton University, Rutgers University, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, Institute for Advanced Study, SRI International (formerly Sarnoff Corporation), and other leading research institutes, and help the area become an internationally recognized economic powerhouse.
Located in the southern portion of Somerset County, Montgomery Township is six miles from Princeton’s downtown, and sits roughly halfway between New York City and Philadelphia. Belle Mead and Skillman are unincorporated areas within the township’s northern and southwestern borders, and the Township offers wide, open spaces in close proximity to world-class cultural, dining, and shopping opportunities.
Education and Schools
Montgomery’s public schools (elementary, lower and upper middle schools, and high school, which consistently ranks among the top in the state) are located in Skillman: Orchard Hill Elementary School (pre-K-2), Village Elementary School (grades 3-4), Montgomery Lower Middle School (grades 5-6), Montgomery Upper Middle School (grades 7-8), Montgomery High School (grades 9-12). There is also a private special needs school, the East Mountain School, for grades 7-12, in Belle Mead. Private schools include the Waldorf School of Princeton (PK-8) and Princeton Montessori School (8 weeks to 15 years).
